Minor Keys」は、控えめなスローガンを<strong>掲げながらも</strong>、具体的な要求をもたない抗議であり、まるで過ぎ去った時代の遺物のように、ますますその生気を失っている。</strong></p>\n\n\n\n<p>アルセナーレの壁面には、ルイジ・ピランデルロが1922年に発表した戯曲のページが掲げられている。そのすぐそばに展示されているのは、この戯曲に着想を得たアメリカ人映像作家エリック・ボードレールの5チャンネル・ビデオ・インスタレーション《Death Passed My Way and Stuck This Flower in My Mouth》（2021年）——第61回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレの企画展「In Minor Keys」を構成する一作だ。ピランデルロの戯曲は、列車に乗り遅れた通勤客が24時間営業のカフェで、上皮腫を患う男（婉曲的に「口に花をくわえた男」と呼ばれる）に出会う顛末を描いている。一方、ボードレールの映像作品の舞台となるのは、「アフリカや南米から何百万本もの花が届き、オークションに向けて査定される」オランダの倉庫だ。そこでは、手袋をした作業員たちがベルトコンベアの前で黄色い花束を仕分けている。両者の関連性が明言されているわけではないが、スイスとカメルーンにルーツを持つキュレーター、コヨ・クオ（1967–2025年）が構想した本展の文脈において、大西洋奴隷貿易の亡霊がその花々に忍び寄ってくるのを感じずにはいられない。というのも、本展は「プランテーション」や「植民地入植」を主要テーマに掲げているうえ、クオが二人の「守護聖人」の一人に据えた<a href=\"https://artreview.com/beverly-buchanans-anti-monuments-feature-chris-fite-wassilak/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ビバリー・ブキャナン</a>は、奴隷制の記憶を刻んだ小屋の彫刻や絵画で知られる作家だからだ。</p>\n\n\n\n<p>展覧会のイントロダクションテキストによれば、会場に用意された哀悼の場は、来場者のあいだに、「抵抗と癒やし」を予感させるような感受性を育む機会として提示されている。その意図は、ブキャナン（1940–2015年）とイッサ・サンブ（1945–2017年）——後者は1990年代のダカールにおけるクオのメンターである——へのオマージュとして捧げられた空間を見れば明らかだ。ロサンゼルスを拠点とした今は亡き詩人ワンダ・コールマンを偲び、ロス市街の夢幻的な映像にゆったりとしたスムースジャズの響きを重ね合わせた、<a href=\"https://artreview.com/the-interview-cauleen-smith/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">コーリーン・スミス</a>によるマルチメディア・インスタレーション《The Wanda Coleman Songbook》（2024年）からもそれは見て取れる。さらには、アルセナーレの入り口に掲げられた、パレスチナの詩人リファアト・アルアリイールによる、「もし私が死なねばならないのなら／あなたは生きなければならない／私の物語を語るために／私の遺したものを売るために……」と始まる詩の一節にも、そのことは明白に示されている。</p>\n\n\n\n<figure Venezia</figcaption></figure>\n\n\n\n<p>哀悼には花がつきものだ。たとえば、ジャルディーニのセントラルパビリオンに展示された、マリア・マグダレナ・カンポス・ポンスによる壁画サイズの絵画。そこに描かれた巨大なマグノリアは、アメリカ南部、ひいてはその経済基盤を構築した奴隷制度の象徴である。絵の中には、今は亡きアメリカ人作家トニ・モリスンと並んでクオの姿が描かれている。モリスンの小説『ビラヴド』（1987年）は、我が子に同じ運命をたどらせまいと自らの手で娘の命を絶った奴隷女性の物語であり、クオが本展を構想するうえで参照したテキストの一つに挙げられている。同じことは、モハメッド・Z・ラーマンの作品《Lovers’ Vigil》（2024年）に描かれたユリやキク、桜の花々にも言える。骨組みだけで構成された「部屋の中の部屋」に座り、来場者はマッチ箱に描かれた、「失恋」にまつわるシンボルの小さな絵を前に思索を巡らせる。その失恋の背景は、同じく展示されているラーマンの別の作品、コンドームのパッケージを模してペイントされた木箱《Memento href=\"https://artreview.com/sohrab-hura-mother-moma-ps1-new-york-review-jenny-wu/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ソーラブ・フラ</a>によるポートレートだ。床に横たわり死装束に包まれた祖母の青ざめた遺体を、3人の家族が見下ろす一枚である。この作品は、フラが現在も手がけるパステル画シリーズ「Things Felt But Not Quite Expressed」（2022年–）で埋め尽くされた壁面に掛けられている。遺体のぽっかりと開いた口のそば、死装束に挟み込まれたメモが、彼女の死亡日時だけをそっけなく告げる。また、ガラス張りの展示箱に拾得物の指輪を並べたローズ・サレーヌの《Panorama 94》（2019年）では、霊能者たちがそれらの指輪のかつての持ち主と交信を試みた。「この女性は事務職でした。夫は最近手術を受けたばかりです」と、ある指輪の下のテキストには記されている。別の霊能者は「ダイエット中の女性の指輪だと感じます」と語る。こうした霊視の言葉の数々は、どこか哀愁漂う弔辞のように読める。呪術めいた魅力を帯びつつも、その響きは清々しいほどに自由で、身も蓋もなく、どこか小憎らしいのだ。</p>\n\n\n\n<figure Genocide Alliance（ANGA）が、ガザでパレスチナ人の虐殺が進行中であることを来場者に訴えかけていた（その1時間前には、ジャルディーニのロシア館前でプッシー・ライオットがロシアによるウクライナ侵攻に抗議するデモを行っていた）。アートが「オアシス」や「熟考」、あるいは「深い傾聴」を約束するその裏で、何世紀にもわたる動産奴隷制を支えてきたのと同種の、国家に公認された暴力がいまもなお猛威を振るっている。これらの抗議は、その事実を私たちにまざまざと思い出させるのだ。</p>\n\n\n\n<p>シュプレヒコールと不穏な空気が渦巻くなか展覧会を進んでいくと、アルフレド・ジャーによる目を射るような真紅のインスタレーション《The End of the World》（2023–2024年）が、まるでこの世の地獄のように見えてくる。赤く染まった壁の一面には長文のテキストが並び、部屋の奥のガラスケースに収められた、立方体の結晶へと圧縮された鉱物について解説している。テキストに目を通した（少数の）来場者は、「広島と長崎に投下された原爆はリチウムで作られていた」という事実を知らされるのだ。「アメリカ軍は、殺傷用の暗視ゴーグルにゲルマニウムを使用している……。コルタンの大部分はコンゴ民主共和国で採掘されているが、それを担うのは手作業の小規模採掘者たちであり、そこには児童労働も含まれている。彼らは世界のコルタン価格の重みを自らの肉体で感じているのだ」。もし別の状況でこの赤い部屋に身を置いたなら、高級なレッドライトセラピーの部屋を想起させたかもしれない。これぞまさにビエンナーレ・アートである。視覚的に魅惑的で、倫理的配慮の行き届いたリサーチに基づき、いかなる文化圏でも消費しやすく、そつなく当たり障りがない。注釈のように控えめなスローガンを掲げつつも具体的な要求をもたない抗議だ。それは結局のところ、新自由主義的グローバリゼーションという過ぎ去った時代の遺物のように、ますますその生気を失っているように感じられてならない。2025年5月のクオの急逝により、「In Minor Keys」は「<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https://artreview.com/how-will-we-critique-the-2026-venice-biennale-martin-herbert/\" target=\"_blank\">死後の展覧会</a>」と呼ばれるようになった。だが、ここで本当に悼まれているのは、ビエンナーレという制度そのもの——すなわち、政治的な対立でさえ、美的体験や婉曲的な言説を通じて一時的に昇華できるという、文化のオリンピックが抱いてきた幻想の死なのかもしれない。</p>\n\n\n\n<p>（翻訳＝Art Translators
